Nagoya Grampus defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka was forced to withdraw from the squad due to a leg injury. Albirex Niigata defender Mitsuru Nagata was called up in his place. Nagata won a call-up for the first time since December 2004.
The 23-member Japan squad, including their Europe-based players, worked on drills and played a mini-game during the session at a Yokohama ground while the Italian coach watched from the stands.
Zaccheroni, who signed a contract on Monday, has yet to obtain a work permit and will have to wait until Japan’s games in October before taking control of the side. JFA technical director Hiromi Hara will work as caretaker manager for the matches against Paraguay and Guatamala.
Zaccheroni commented, “Right now I am studying [the players] by watching the sessions. I hope I can learn something good and new from the upcoming matches.”
Hara said, “Zac told me I could do things any way I want. I hope I can do well for a smooth handover.”
The Japan-Paraguay match is to kickoff at 7:20 p.m. at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama on September 4, while the Japan-Guatemala game will kick off at 7:45 p.m. at Nagai Track and Field Stadium in Osaka on September 7.
